About Lady Gilbert
Named after her grandmother who was killed in the Shoah, Esther spent the 1980s in Edmonton, where she became involved with Federation’s Generation After Committee. Her work in bringing Rudolf Vrba to Edmonton 36 years ago led to a correspondence with Sir Martin Gilbert, who had extensively written about Vrba’s escape from Auschwitz and the report that brought Auschwitz’s atrocities to the Allies. Years later, she began a project to index published survivor memoirs, which evolved into three volumes of Holocaust Memoir Digest.
Esther also created a six-lecture series titled Holocaust 101, covering Jewish history, antisemitism, the Shoah, and the establishment of Israel. In recent decades, she assisted Sir Martin with his work and, since his passing, has focused on maintaining his legacy. She continues to manage the website martingilbert.com and writes monthly newsletters featuring excerpts from his books. She now resides in Canmore, Alberta, and has two daughters—one in Canmore and one in Israel.
Sir Martin Gilbert, a renowned historian, authored 88 books, including 6 of the 8 volumes of Winston Churchill’s biography. His areas of interest spanned Churchill’s life (15 books), the Holocaust (11 books), Israel (13 books), the World Wars (8 books), and 20th-century history. He was appointed a CBE in 1990 and became a Knight Bachelor in 1995. Sir Martin passed away in 2015, and upon marrying him, Esther became “Lady Gilbert.”
