Aquatics Program Coordinator

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Aquatics Program Coordinator to join our leadership team at the Steven Blitz Aquatics Centre. The role is integral to implementing and overseeing our new unique Lifesaving Society JSwim continuous lesson program. This position will contribute strategic direction, operational efficiency, and programming excellence to our aquatics leadership team. This new position demands an individual with strong leadership, organizational, and customer service skills, with a deep commitment to maintaining high safety and program standards. You will be involved in overseeing program operations, staff supervision, training, and continuous improvement of aquatics programs.

As a key member of the Aquatics Leadership Team, you will also participate in frontline operations as needed and ensure the team delivers exceptional customer service to all members and guests.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead the success of aquatics programs and overall operations.
  • Oversee and evaluate staff performance, offering guidance and constructive feedback.
  • Assist in the facilitation and evaluation of departmental in-services, training, and employee evaluations.
  • Enforce safety standards and ensure staff compliance with aquatics department policies.
  • Supervise and assist in the hiring, onboarding, and training of aquatics staff.
  • Coordinate and facilitate member engagement activities.
  • Maintain departmental knowledge and ensure that staff are well-versed in safety, emergency procedures, and other essential protocols.

 

Administration & Scheduling

  • Oversee the daily scheduling of aquatics programs, including swim-for-life, swim club, and certifications.
  • Manage the planning and scheduling of instructors and trainers for certification programs.
  • Maintain and update the aquatics department’s administrative records, including certifications and staff schedules.
  • Work closely with the Aquatics Leadership Team and Assistant Executive Director on operational strategies.
  • Assist with marketing and promoting aquatics programs.

 

Lifeguarding & Water Safety

  • Ensure a high standard of health and safety for all patrons, in line with Lifesaving Society regulations and facility policies.
  • Lead by example, supervising aquatics programming, enforcing pool rules, and educating patrons on water safety.
  • Respond promptly to first aid emergencies, ensuring safety and compliance.

 

Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the aquatics department, including ensuring that pool chemicals and safety equipment are appropriately handled and stocked.
  • Complete maintenance duties and cleaning tasks in a timely manner.
  • Manage and report chemical imbalances, pool repairs, and other operational issues.

 

Public Relations & Communication

  • Foster positive relationships with members, guests, and fellow employees.
  • Ensure effective communication within the department and across the organization.
  • Record daily logs and shift reports for operational transparency.

 

Emergency Response & Special Events

  • Be well-versed in emergency procedures and respond calmly and efficiently to emergencies.
  • Assist in organizing, promoting, and running special events and programs within the aquatics department.

 

Qualifications

  • Current National Lifeguarding (NL) Certification.
  • Current Lifesaving & Swim Instructor (LSI) Certification.
  • Current First Aid/CPR C/AED Certification.
  • Standard First Aid Instructor Certification.
  • NL Instructor Certification.
  • Mandatory Trainer Certification(s).
  • Police Security Check and Vulnerable Sector Search (within the last three years).
  • Previous aquatics leadership experience (3+ years) preferred.
  • Pool Operator 1 Certification and National Trainer Certification are assets.
  • Additional education in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, or related fields is an asset.
  • Ability to work mornings, evenings, and weekends.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
  • Capable of working in a noisy, hot, and humid environment.
  • May require standing on deck for extended periods.
  • Must handle chemical hazards and cleaning supplies safely.
  • Availability to work varying shifts, including overtime or being on call during emergencies or short staffing.

Schedule

  • Tuesday to Saturday, with flexible hours to meet job completion needs.
  • Some evenings, mornings, and weekend work are required.
  • 37.5 administrative hours weekly, with additional frontline coverage when necessary.
